About

Hello and welcome to my personal website! My name is Floris Calkoen, a PhD student specializing in coastal morphology, where I primarily focus on monitoring coastal changes on a continental scale.

From a young age, I developed a fascination for water by growing up near the coast and going on adventures in sailing dinghies. I was further drawn to the sea during my teenage years when I began surfing, which created my passion for the ocean. Since then, I have been fortunate to travel the world, studying, living, and catching waves.

Today, my exploration has taken a new turn as I frequently “visit” the coast from space. My work involves leveraging satellite data from sources like Landsat, Sentinel, and Planet to monitor changes along the coastline. Given the enormous scale and size of these datasets, it’s essential that the applications I use are cloud-native to enhance efficiency and scalability. Initially, my geospatial analysis was conducted with Google Earth Engine. However, I’ve recently transitioned to using the Planetary Computer, adopting the Pangeo approach for large-scale environmental data analysis.

This website primarily serves as a platform where I document my professional career. I might also share some of my work with a broader audience through blog posts. So, stay tuned and enjoy your visit!
