Floris Calkoen is a coastal scientist (PhD) with a broad background in geology, philosophy, data science, and marine sciences.
I specialize in Earth Observation, global geospatial data analysis, and GeoAI, usually with a focus on climate risk. During my PhD I applied new technologies at scale – mapping the world’s coast using deep learning from petabytes of satellite data – and co-developed an EU Horizon 2020 web portal for coastal climate services. That work shaped a vision of how to turn big geospatial data into products that can inform policymakers, effectively bridging Earth observation to policy. I am especially interested in work that combines scientific depth, technical leadership, and climate resilience. At the same time, I am currently developing coastal tours that help people learn to read coastal landscapes through the eyes of a coastal geomorphologist. I value working with people, have lived and worked across multiple continents, and like speaking multiple languages – currently improving my French, which I would like to speak fluently one day.
This website primarily serves as a place where I document my professional work and related projects. Here you will find my Résumé, a more detailed Curriculum Vitae, some of my writings, and information about my coastal tours. Please feel free to get in touch.
